Calendula officinalis (marigold)

Calendula officinalis, more commonly known as marigold, is a flowering plant native to southern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean region. Renowned for its medicinal properties, it exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing effects. These therapeutic benefits are attributed to its composition of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, triterpenoids, glycosides, saponins, and carotenoids. Traditionally, Calendula officinalis has been utilized for treating various medical conditions including skin inflammation, wounds, and ulcers. A 2019 systematic review PMID: 31145533 evaluated its wound healing role - findings suggested treatment with its flower extract leads to faster resolution of inflammation and increased granulation tissue production. Historically, its vibrant flowers were used in ancient Greek, Roman, Middle Eastern, and Indian cultures as a medicinal herb and as a dye for fabrics, foods, and cosmetics. The name "Calendula" is derived from the Latin term "Kalendae," referring to the first day of the month, reflecting the plant's tendency to bloom at the beginning of each month.
