Mentha piperita (peppermint)

Mentha piperita, commonly known as peppermint, is a hybrid perennial herb in the family Lamiaceae originally identified in Europe and the Middle East, but now widely cultivated in temperate climates worldwide and frequently found in moist habitats. Its aromatic leaves have a cool, refreshing menthol scent and a slightly sweet, cooling taste. Peppermint is known for antispasmodic, carminative, cooling, antimicrobial, and digestive-supporting properties largely attributed to volatile oil constituents such as menthol, menthone, and 1,8-cineole, along with its flavonoids and phenolic acids. Peppermint is used for supporting irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, dyspepsia, bloating, gas, and topically for tension headaches and muscle discomfort. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study found that enteric-coated peppermint oil significantly improved abdominal pain, bloating, stool frequency, and other IBS symptoms compared with placebo after 4 weeks of treatment, supporting its use in functional GI (gastrointestinal) symptom relief PMID: 17420159. Historically, peppermint’s use traces back to ancient Egypt, where it was recorded in the Ebers Papyrus for digestive support, and it later became widely cultivated in 17th-century England after the hybrid species Mentha × piperita was formally described, eventually spreading into European pharmacopeias as both a digestive remedy and an aromatic herb.
